# Planning Grab Bars and Shower Seating

> Where to place shower grab bars and seats, why proper wall anchoring matters, and how to plan for comfortable, safe bathing.

Grab bars and seats only help if they are in the right place and solidly anchored.\*

## Where grab bars help most

* **At the shower entry**, a vertical bar to hold while stepping in and out.
* **On the back wall**, a horizontal bar for balance while standing.
* **Near the controls and seat**, to help you sit down and stand up.
* **Beside the toilet**, for sitting and rising.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Towel bars and suction-cup handles are not grab bars. Real grab bars must be anchored into wall framing or solid blocking.

## Shower seating options

* **Built-in bench:** always there, sturdy.
* **Fold-down seat:** stays out of the way when not needed.
* **Freestanding shower chair:** flexible, but can slide or tip on wet floors.

## Pair seating with

* A handheld showerhead on a slide bar
* Controls reachable while seated
* A shelf or niche within reach of the seat

## Frequently asked questions

> **Can grab bars be added to an existing shower?**
>
> Often yes, as long as they can be anchored securely. We check the wall before installing.

> **Do grab bars have to look institutional?**
>
> No. Many finishes match faucets and towel bars, so they blend in.
