# Cabinet Refacing vs. Cabinet Replacement

> When cabinet refacing makes sense, when a cabinet renovation or replacement is better, and how to tell which your kitchen needs.

If your cabinets look dated but work fine, you may not need new ones.

## Refacing

[Cabinet refacing](https://allstarreno.com/kitchen-remodeling/cabinet-refacing) keeps your existing cabinet boxes and replaces the visible parts: doors, drawer fronts, and veneer on the frames. New hardware and soft-close hinges are often added.

**Good fit when:** boxes are solid and dry, you like the layout, and you want a new look with less disruption.

## Renovation or replacement

[Cabinet renovations](https://allstarreno.com/kitchen-remodeling/cabinet-renovations) address layout, function or damaged boxes, and can include adding, removing or rebuilding cabinets.

**Good fit when:** boxes are water-damaged or sagging, you want a different layout, or you need more storage.

## How to tell which you need

> **Check under the sink**
>
> Soft, swollen or stained cabinet floors suggest water damage that refacing will not fix.

> **Open every door and drawer**
>
> Racked boxes, doors that will not line up, or drawers that drag may point to structural problems.

> **Think about the layout**
>
> If the layout works, refacing is often enough. If it does not, consider a renovation.

## Frequently asked questions

> **Is refacing less disruptive than replacement?**
>
> Usually.\* Because the boxes and countertops typically stay in place, your kitchen stays more usable during the work.

> **Can I add new countertops when I reface?**
>
> Yes. Many homeowners combine refacing with [countertop replacement](https://allstarreno.com/kitchen-remodeling/countertop-replacement) and a new [backsplash](https://allstarreno.com/kitchen-remodeling/backsplash-installation).
