# How to Choose a Bathroom Vanity

> Size, storage, height, countertop and sink choices to consider when picking a bathroom vanity for your remodel.

The vanity is the most-used piece of furniture in a bathroom. Getting the size and features right makes the whole room work better.

## Size and clearance

* Measure the wall space and leave room for doors and drawers to open fully.
* Keep a comfortable walkway in front of the vanity and clearance beside the toilet.
* In small bathrooms, a narrower or wall-mounted vanity can open up floor space.

## Height

* **Standard height** works for most households.
* **Comfort height** (taller) means less bending.
* **Open-knee or wall-mounted** designs can allow seated or wheelchair use. See [Aging-in-Place & ADA](https://allstarreno.com/bathroom-remodeling/aging-in-place-ada).

## Storage

Drawers keep small items organized. Doors suit bulky items. A mix of both is a good default.\*

## Single or double sink

Two sinks help busy shared bathrooms. One sink leaves more counter space.

## Countertop and sink

Choose a top that resists water and stains, with a sink style (undermount, integrated or vessel) that is easy for you to clean. See [Countertop Materials](https://allstarreno.com/docs/materials/countertop-materials.md).

A vanity swap is often part of a [full bathroom remodel](https://allstarreno.com/bathroom-remodeling) or can be handled as a [handyman installation](https://allstarreno.com/handyman-services/installation).

## Frequently asked questions

> **Can I replace a vanity without remodeling the whole bathroom?**
>
> Yes, if the plumbing stays in roughly the same spot. Flooring may need touch-up if the new vanity has a smaller footprint.

> **What vanity height is best for older adults?**
>
> A comfort-height vanity reduces bending. Open-knee designs can help if someone uses a wheelchair or prefers to sit.
