How Long Does Bathroom Remodeling Typically Take?

Straight answers from a Conway, AR remodeling team: 20 years of experience, in business since 2014, 500+ remodels, licensed and insured.

Quick Answer

Most bathroom remodels take 3 to 6 weeks of construction, or about 2 to 3 months once you add design, selections and ordering. A powder room refresh can finish in 3 to 4 weeks, while a custom primary bath or full gut renovation often runs 8 to 12 weeks or more.

By Project Type

Typical Construction Time by Project

About 3 to 4 weeks. New vanity, toilet, lighting, paint and flooring with no layout changes.

Small full bathroom

About 4 to 6 weeks. A complete update of a hall or secondary bath with the plumbing left in place.

Standard guest bathroom

About 5 to 7 weeks. New shower or tub surround, tile, vanity and fixtures.

Custom primary bath or full gut

About 8 to 12 weeks or more. Walls down to the studs, layout changes, custom showers and specialty finishes.

Phase by Phase

How Long Each Phase Takes

Planning and design

1 to 3 weeks to measure, choose a layout and finalize selections. Ordering can start once choices are locked in.

Demolition

2 to 4 days to remove the old fixtures, surfaces and damaged materials.

Plumbing and electrical rough-in

2 days to 2 weeks, depending on whether anything moves. An inspection may be required before walls close.

Waterproofing and tile

1 to 3 weeks, including curing time for mortar, grout and waterproofing so the shower lasts.

Fixtures and finishes

1 to 2 weeks for the vanity, toilet, glass, trim, paint, caulk and final cleanup.

From Our Crew

What Slows a Project Down

Three things add the most time. Custom vanities, special-order tile and frameless glass can carry lead times of 6 to 12 weeks, so we order them before demolition whenever we can. Hidden damage, such as rotted subfloor around an old toilet or a slow shower leak, has to be repaired before anything new goes in. Permits and inspections add scheduling steps when plumbing or electrical work changes.

A grout-free All-Star Shower System or a tub-to-shower conversion is usually much faster than a full tile remodel because there is less curing time.

FAQ

Questions

Can I use my bathroom during the remodel?
Usually not while demolition, rough-in and tile are under way. If it is your only bathroom, tell us at the quote so we can plan the order of work around that.
Why does planning take so long?
Selections drive the schedule. Ordering materials before demolition prevents a torn-out bathroom from sitting idle while you wait on a vanity or glass.
Is a shower-only replacement faster?
Yes. Replacing just the shower or converting a tub to a shower is often much quicker than a full remodel, especially with grout-free wall panels.
