What Are the Different Types of Bathroom Remodeling?

Straight answers from a Conway, AR remodeling team: 20 years of experience, in business since 2014, 500+ remodels, licensed and insured.

Quick Answer

Bathroom remodels fall into six main types: a cosmetic refresh, a fixture upgrade, a partial remodel, a layout change, a full gut renovation and an accessible or aging-in-place remodel. They differ in how much changes behind the walls, which shapes the timeline, the permits needed and the overall investment.

Six Project Types

From a Quick Refresh to a Full Gut

Cosmetic refresh

Paint, mirrors, lighting, hardware and accessories. The layout and plumbing stay as they are.

Fixture upgrade

New vanity, toilet, faucets or shower trim in the same locations.

Partial remodel

One major area replaced, such as the shower or tub surround, often with a new vanity and floor.

Layout change

Moving the toilet, shower, tub or vanity. This means new drains and supply lines and usually a permit.

Full gut renovation

Everything removed to the studs and subfloor, then rebuilt with new waterproofing, plumbing, electrical and finishes.

Accessible or aging-in-place

Curbless showers, grab bar blocking, seating, wider entries and slip-resistant floors so the bathroom works for years to come.

How to Choose

Start with what is not working. If the bathroom is sound but dated, a refresh or fixture upgrade may be enough. If the shower leaks, the tub goes unused or the space no longer fits your needs, a partial remodel such as a tub-to-shower conversion or walk-in shower usually gives the biggest improvement. For safety and mobility, see our aging-in-place and ADA remodeling page.

FAQ

Questions

What is the most popular type of bathroom remodel?
In our Central Arkansas projects, shower replacements and tub-to-shower conversions are among the most requested because they fix the area that wears out first.
Does a full gut always need a permit?
Work that changes plumbing or electrical generally needs one. Requirements depend on your city, so we confirm them for each project.
Can a remodel be done in stages?
Yes. Many homeowners replace the shower first and update the vanity and floor later.
