This page is general information, not legal advice. Permit rules differ between cities and unincorporated areas and can change. Always confirm with your local building department.

When a permit is usually needed

Most cities, including Conway, require permits* for work that changes a home’s structure or its plumbing, electrical or mechanical systems. Projects that often fall into that category include:
  • Moving or adding plumbing lines, drains or fixtures
  • Adding or moving electrical circuits, outlets or lighting
  • Removing or moving walls
  • Adding ventilation fans that vent outside

When a permit is often not needed

Cosmetic, like-for-like work often does not need a permit,* for example:
  • Replacing a shower surround or vanity in the same location
  • Painting, new hardware or cabinet refacing
  • New countertops or a backsplash with no plumbing or electrical changes

Who to contact

  • Inside Conway city limits: the City of Conway’s permits and inspections office.
  • Other Faulkner County cities (such as Greenbrier or Vilonia): that city’s building office.
  • Unincorporated Faulkner County: Faulkner County offices.
  • Pulaski, Lonoke and Saline County cities we serve, such as Little Rock, Cabot or Benton: that city’s building office.
If you live in an HOA neighborhood, check your HOA rules as well.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on the scope and your city. A conversion that keeps the drain in place may be treated differently from one that moves plumbing. Ask during your quote and confirm with your local building office.
Ask your contractor. When a permit is required for work All-Star Renovations performs, we will discuss it with you during planning.
Unpermitted work can cause problems with inspections, insurance claims or selling your home later. It is worth checking first.
